At the University Hospital School of Medicine, five ambitious students temporarily induce their own deaths in the hope of glimpsing the afterlife. As their visions follow them back into waking life and competition within the group grows, they discover that what they have tried to suppress may be more frightening than anything beyond the grave.

Featuring Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Bacon, Flatliners brings together a young ensemble cast under Schumacher’s direction, with cinematography by Jan de Bont.
