Letty Lynton (DVD)

Letty Lynton is a stylish pre-Code MGM melodrama built around Joan Crawford at her most glamorous, commanding, and emotionally volatile. Directed by Clarence Brown, this rarely seen classic captures the polish, danger, and larger-than-life elegance of Hollywood’s early studio era.

Crawford plays Letty, a socialite in Uruguay trying to escape a toxic relationship and begin again. When her past threatens a promising romance with Robert Montgomery, a shocking poisoning and a bold false alibi send the story into high-stakes territory. The result is a tense character drama shaped by desire, deception, and the consequences of trying to outrun one’s past.

Part of the film’s enduring appeal is its MGM craftsmanship. Crawford’s performance anchors the drama, while the production’s lavish style and Adrian’s celebrated costume designs give Letty Lynton the unmistakable visual flair of classic studio Hollywood. A strong choice for Joan Crawford devotees, pre-Code cinema enthusiasts, and collectors of vintage melodrama.
