"Sweet Jesus Preacher Man" is a 1973 blaxploitation film directed by Henning Schellerup. The film stars Roger E. Mosley as Holmes, a hitman who poses as a preacher in a small Southern town.

Synopsis

Holmes, a contract killer, is assigned a job by his crime boss, Martelli. The job requires Holmes to go undercover as a preacher named Reverend Lee in a small Southern town to locate and retrieve a stash of stolen loot hidden by a rival gang. As he settles into his role, Holmes begins to genuinely care for the community and its members. His transformation from a cold-hearted hitman to a compassionate preacher is central to the film's plot.

However, Holmes' dual identity leads to conflicts and complications. As he navigates his new role, he must maintain his cover while dealing with the threats from both the townspeople, who are initially suspicious of him, and the rival gang that is after the same loot. The tension builds as Holmes tries to balance his violent past with his newfound role, leading to a climactic showdown.

The film combines elements of action, drama, and social commentary, typical of the blaxploitation genre. It addresses themes such as redemption, identity, and the struggles of African American communities in the 1970s. "Sweet Jesus Preacher Man" is notable for its portrayal of a complex protagonist and its blend of gritty action with heartfelt moments.
