Synopsis:
The Five Deadly Venoms (1978) is a classic martial arts film from the legendary Shaw Brothers Studio, directed by Chang Cheh. It's one of the most iconic and influential films of the kung fu genre, showcasing some of the best fight choreography and character work that defined the golden age of martial arts cinema.
The film follows a young man named Yang (played by Chiang Sheng) who is trained by his master in the ways of the Shaolin kung fu tradition. Before his master dies, he tasks Yang with locating the five deadly venoms—five former students who have each mastered a unique and deadly style of kung fu. These styles include the centipede, scorpion, toad, lizard, and snake, each with its own set of powerful abilities.
As Yang searches for these individuals, he discovers that each of the venoms has gone rogue, using their skills for personal gain. In a series of intense and dramatic showdowns, Yang must decide who is friend and who is foe, as he navigates treachery, betrayal, and deadly combat.
The Five Deadly Venoms is known for its colorful characters and elaborate fight sequences, with each "Venom" master using their unique kung fu style in one-on-one battles. The film is also noted for its intricate plotting, as Yang tries to piece together the truth behind the venoms and their allegiances.
