"Thomasine & Bushrod" is a 1974 blaxploitation Western film directed by Gordon Parks Jr. and written by, as well as starring, Max Julien and Vonetta McGee. The movie is notable for its blend of Western themes with the blaxploitation genre, creating a unique narrative centered around two outlaw lovers. Synopsis Set in the 1910s, the film follows Thomasine (Vonetta McGee) and Bushrod (Max Julien), two African American outlaws in the Southwestern United States. The duo embark on a crime spree reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde, robbing banks and wealthy landowners to redistribute wealth to the poor, particularly oppressed African Americans and Mexicans. Thomasine, a tough and savvy former bounty hunter, partners with Bushrod, a charismatic and daring bandit. Together, they form a formidable team, using their wits and skills to outsmart law enforcement and evade capture. Their chemistry and romantic relationship add depth to their characters, making them more than just criminals. As they continue their spree, Thomasine and Bushrod become folk heroes among the marginalized communities they help. However, their notoriety also brings increased attention from the law, including a relentless lawman named Bogardie (George Murdock), who is determined to bring them to justice. Throughout the film, the couple faces numerous challenges, both from external threats and within their relationship. The pressures of their outlaw lifestyle and the constant danger they live in test their bond.
