Sergeant York (1941) is a classic American film starring Gary Cooper as Alvin C. York, one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War I. The movie was directed by Howard Hawks and became a major success both critically and financially. Gary Cooper even won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of York.
The story follows Alvin York, a poor Tennessee farmer and a skilled marksman, who initially resists the idea of war because of his religious beliefs. However, after being drafted, he wrestles with his conscience and ultimately decides to serve. In France, he famously captures a large number of German soldiers almost single-handedly, becoming a national hero.
